We operate out of ATICO House at 5309 in the Grain Market area, which is quite close to the B. D. Senior Secondary School. It’s an old part of town, and you can hear the school bells and the noise from the market all through the day. Our building has been here for a long time, and it feels more like a home than a corporate office. We deal with medical supplies and lab equipment, so the rooms are filled with glass tubes, microscopes, and various wooden crates. It’s a bit of a maze inside with all the stock we keep on hand. We don't have a fancy showroom; we usually just bring items out to show people when they ask. Most of us have worked here for years and we know exactly where every small part is hidden on the shelves. In the winters, it gets quite cold in these thick-walled rooms, so we keep the kettle going for tea throughout the day. We spend a lot of time writing out invoices by hand or on the old computer and checking that the fragile items are packed safely with plenty of straw or bubble wrap. It’s a steady, quiet kind of life here in the market, focusing on getting the right tools to doctors and schools who need them. There’s always a bit of dust on the shelves, but we try to keep the instruments clean and ready for use.
