R. K. Marbles

You can find R. K. Marbles out on Sahazadpur Road in Saha. We are pretty easy to spot because we are near the Red Hot Resort and the Hanuman Mandir. Having the temple nearby is nice, you can hear the bells in the morning when things are still quiet. Most of the time though, it’s quite noisy because of the stone cutting. There is white dust over almost everything in the yard. I have to wipe down my chair every time I want to sit. We have stacks of marble slabs lined up and they are very heavy, so we have to be careful when we move them around. The road outside gets a lot of trucks going back and forth. We spend our time showing people the different patterns in the stone. No two pieces look exactly the same, which is the interesting part of the job. It’s hard work on the back and the hands get rough, but that’s just how it is in this trade. We don't have a big showroom with air conditioning. It’s mostly just the warehouse and the yard. We have a small kettle for making tea when customers come by to talk about their houses. People usually come in with measurements scribbled on scraps of paper. We try to help them find what fits their needs. It’s a straightforward business and we stay busy from morning until sunset.
