Shree Ram Murti Kala Kendar

Our workshop, Shree Ram Murti Kala Kendar, is in Akbarpur, Alwar. We are pretty close to Alwar Bag. This is where we make statues and different kinds of art. It’s a dusty place because of all the stone and carving work. We have pieces of art in various stages of completion all over the yard. Rajasthan has a long history of this kind of work, and we are just continuing that tradition in our own way. It’s not a fancy gallery. It's a place where work gets done. You’ll see us with hammers and chisels most days. We get a lot of people stopping by who are heading towards the Alwar Bag area. Sometimes they just want to look, other times they want something specific made. We don't have a big sales pitch. We just show what we are working on. The weather in Alwar can be really harsh, but we stay outside working. It’s a quiet life mostly, focused on the stone. Each piece takes time. We don't rush things. It's about getting the shape right. We’ve been here in Akbarpur for quite a while. Most of the locals know us. It’s a small operation, just a few of us who know the craft. We just keep our heads down and carve. It is hard on the hands and the back but seeing a finished statue makes it feel like we did something good with our time.
