About Jos Coir Mills – Agriculture & Farming in Alappuzha
Down here in Pathirapally, right near the post office, is where we run Jos Coir Mills. Coir is a messy business, but it's what we know best. We spend our days surrounded by coconut husks and fibers. It’s a lot of manual work, and the air is always filled with that earthy smell of wet coir. We don’t have any high-tech machines; we rely a lot on the skills of the folks who have been working with us for years. The mill isn't a modern building by any means. It’s got a tin roof that gets really loud when it rains, and the floors are always covered in bits of fiber. We just focus on processing the coir and getting it ready for whoever needs it next. It’s a quiet life in this part of town, away from the big city noise. We know all our neighbors, and most of the people working here live just a short walk away. We don’t really do any advertising or have a big sales team. Word of mouth seems to work fine for us. Sometimes the supply of husks is low, and other times we have more than we can handle, but that’s just how the seasons go. We take it one day at a time, keeping the machines running and making sure the quality is okay for the local buyers who depend on us. It is hard work, but it keeps us going.
