Khadi Bhavan & Handloom House

Our shop is over near the Swatram Mills on Tilak Road. It is called Maharashtra Khadi Bhandar and we have been in this spot for a long time. We sell mostly khadi clothes and different kinds of handloom fabrics. The building is old and sometimes it feels a bit cramped because we have so much stock piled up. We have stacks of cotton and silk everywhere you look. People come in from Tilak Road to find something simple to wear. It is a quiet place inside, away from the traffic noise outside. We spend a lot of time folding clothes and putting them back on the shelves. There are no fancy decorations or lights here. We just have some fans to keep the air moving when it gets hot in the afternoon. Most of the people who work here have been doing this for years. We know where every piece of cloth is kept. We get fabric from different weavers and it arrives in big bundles. Sometimes the colors are a bit different than the last batch, but that is how it goes with handloom. We open the doors in the morning and wait for the regulars to stop by. We don't do any big marketing. People just know we are here near the mills. We eat our lunch in the back and talk about the news. It is a basic way to run a business but it works for us. Our address is easy to find if you are near the mills.
