We are based out at Plot Number 9 in Ajmer. This part of Rajasthan is famous for its stone, and we have been right in the middle of it for years. R K Marble Pvt. Ltd sounds like a big name, but we are still just regular people working with stone at the end of the day. The plot is quite large because we need the space to store all the heavy blocks that come in from the quarries. It is a bit messy, with water running everywhere to keep the blades cool during the cutting process. We spend most of our mornings checking the quality of the new arrivals. The air is always thick with that earthy smell of wet stone and dust. We do not have much of a corporate structure; things are pretty informal around the office. If a customer comes by, we just walk them through the rows of slabs ourselves. Sometimes we have to deal with broken machinery or delays at the quarry, which can be frustrating, but that is just how this business goes. We stay busy through the heat and the constant dust. It is a lot of physical effort and making sure the cuts are as straight as they can be. We have been here a long time and just focus on the day-to-day tasks that need finishing. Every single slab is different.
