Deepak Navelty Store is right opposite the Tanga Stand in Nala Bazar. It’s a lively spot, to say the least. Between the horses and the shoppers, there’s never a quiet moment during the day. We sell all kinds of novelty items, the sort of things you didn’t know you needed until you saw them sitting on the shelf. The shop is small, and we try to use every inch of wall space to hang things up. It gets a bit dark in the back, so we have a couple of extra lamps back there to help people see. Nala Bazar is the heart of the town, and being here means we see everyone who walks by. I spend a lot of time talking to the other shopkeepers while we wait for the morning rush to start. We get our stock from different suppliers, and sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s just okay. We just put it out and see what people think. I’ve had this shop for a long time, and I’ve seen kids grow up and bring their own children in here to buy toys. It’s not a business with a lot of rules or procedures. We open when the sun is up and close when it gets dark. Sometimes I stay a bit later if someone is still browsing the aisles. The floor is old stone and it’s seen better days, but it’s sturdy. We just keep going.
