This is the headquarters for the Mizoram Range of the Assam Rifles, right here in the Khatla area of Aizawl. Being up in the hills means the weather is always doing something different, usually either very rainy or quite foggy. We are a Government of India post. The office isn't like those big glass buildings you see in Delhi. It is a more rugged setup, which makes sense for the Assam Rifles. We handle the administration and the range coordination from this spot. Everyone in Khatla knows where we are. You walk up the slope and there are the gates. Inside, it is mostly just the sound of boots on the gravel and the hum of the old computers. We do a lot of reporting and keeping track of what is happening across the range. It gets dark early in Mizoram, so the day starts before most people are even awake. We drink a lot of tea to stay warm during the monsoon months. The walls are thick and painted that standard government cream color. There are maps pinned up everywhere on the walls. It is a busy place but in a quiet, methodical way. We don't have many visitors unless it’s official business or someone from another unit passing through. Life here is steady. We just follow the routine and make sure the paperwork moves from one desk to the next without getting stuck in a pile. It is a long way from the capital, but the work is important.
