Shree Udyog

If you are looking for Plot No 78/4, you have to go right behind the Bank of Baroda in Phase I of Vatva. It’s a bit tucked away, so people sometimes miss the turn. We have a small sign, but it’s faded now. Shree Udyog has been here since the roads were mostly dirt. Now it's all paved but the traffic in Vatva is still a nightmare in the evenings. Our building is an old one. The walls could use a fresh coat of paint, but we are too busy to worry about that. Inside, we have our machines set up for the production. It’s cramped because we keep adding more stuff as the years go by. We do a lot of the work by hand still, checking the pieces one by one. There’s a small room in the front where we keep the finished stock. It’s dusty because of the industrial area, so we have to wipe everything down before it goes out. Most of the staff has been with us for ten years or more. We know each other’s families. We don’t have fancy meetings. We just talk over lunch about what needs to get done by Friday. Sometimes the rain leaks a little near the back door, so we put some plastic over the crates. It’s just a normal factory life. We keep our heads down and do the work. The bank being so close is handy for the Friday payroll.
