Working at an ice plant means it’s always a bit damp and cold, even when the sun is beating down on Phase-4 of the Gidc. We are located at Plot No. 2708/A. You can usually hear the hum of the compressors from the street before you even see the sign. We spend the whole day moving blocks around and making sure the freezing cycles are on time. It’s heavy work, and your boots are always wet, but you get used to it after a week or two. The office is just a small corner with a wooden desk and a calendar that’s a month behind. We don't spend much time sitting down anyway. Most of the time, we’re out on the floor or loading the back of a delivery truck. The machinery is loud, so we have to shout over it sometimes to hear each other. We supply a lot of the local shops and vendors who need to keep their stuff chilled. Sometimes the power goes out and we all scramble to check the backup, but that’s just part of the routine here. It isn't a glamorous job, and the floor is slippery if you aren't wearing the right shoes. We’ve got a small crew, mostly guys from nearby who’ve been doing this for years. We just focus on getting the ice out before it starts to melt in the heat. It’s simple, cold work in a very hot area.
