Our place, Textile Machinery Mfg. Co., is situated near Kamdar Maidan in the Telephone B D Compound in Gomtipur. It’s an industrial area, so there’s always a lot of noise and dust around. We’ve been here for quite some time, and the building shows its age, but it’s sturdy. Inside, the floor is mostly taken up by heavy metal parts and the machines we use to put things together. It’s not the kind of place where you’d want to wear nice clothes because you’re likely to get some oil or rust on them. The staff here is a mix of older guys who’ve been doing this for thirty years and some younger ones learning the ropes. We don't have a big marketing department or anything like that. Most of our work comes from people who already know where we are and what we can do. We spend a lot of time tinkering with gearboxes and frames. It’s loud work, with the sound of metal hitting metal being the soundtrack to our days. We take a break for lunch together near the compound entrance, usually talking about the news or the weather. When the day ends, we lock up the big heavy gates and head home. It’s a simple, hardworking environment. We don't try to be anything we aren't; we just build and fix textile machinery because that’s what we know how to do. We just keep our focus on the iron and the grease and getting the machines shipped out. It's a living and we're good with it.
