You can find us at shop 108 in the New Cloth Market. This is in the Sarangpur area of Ahmedabad. If you know anything about Ahmedabad, you know this market is a very old and famous place for fabrics. Our shop is just one of many in these long rows. We have stacks of textiles everywhere you look. It smells like cotton and dyes in here. We spend our days unrolling fabric, measuring it out, and folding it back up. It is a busy place with a lot of porters carrying heavy bales on their backs. The aisles are narrow and it gets very hot in the afternoons. We don't have a big marketing strategy. We just open the shutters in the morning and wait for the regular customers to come by. Many of the people we deal with have been buying from this market for decades. We have to keep track of a lot of different patterns and materials. Sometimes the shop feels too small for all the stock we have, so we have to stack things high up. It is not a modern mall. It is a traditional market where you have to haggle and talk to people face to face. We are just part of the daily routine here in Sarangpur. There is always someone drinking tea and talking about the price of cloth or the weather. We just keep working through the piles of fabric until it is finally time to close up for the day.
