Our shop is located at number 29 in the New Cloth Market, which is just outside Raipur Gate in Ahmedabad. This whole place has been around for a long time, and the market itself is almost always crowded with people moving big stacks of fabric back and forth. Seth Jiwan Dass Desraj Co is not a huge operation by any means, but we stay busy enough just keeping up with the daily orders that come through the door. The shop is pretty much full of rolls of cloth piled high, and sometimes it feels like there is hardly enough space to move around, especially on days when a new shipment arrives. We spend most of our mornings opening up the metal shutters and checking what needs to go out to customers that day. It gets incredibly hot in this part of Ahmedabad, so we usually have the ceiling fans going as fast as they can. Working in the textile trade means we deal with a lot of different people, from local tailors to folks who are just looking for a specific kind of material. We do not spend much time on fancy decorations or anything. The walls are mostly covered in wooden shelves and old ledgers. It is a loud and dusty environment, but that is just the way the cloth market is. We have been here so many years that all the neighbors feel like family. We just handle the business, talk to regulars, and head home.
