At Shivam Sizing, the day starts pretty early. We are tucked away at Plot No. C-1B 3907/2 in Phase-4 of the GIDC in Vatva. If you know the area, you know it’s mostly just factories and small shops. Our work involves sizing, which is basically getting yarn ready for the looms. It’s a lot of steam and a lot of heat. The humidity in the building can get pretty high, especially in the afternoons. We have several big machines running at once, and they make a steady humming sound that you just learn to live with. Most of us have been working here at Plot No. C-1B 3907/2 for a long time. We know the quirks of every machine, like which one needs a little extra attention to start or which one runs a bit too fast. We don’t have fancy titles or a big board of directors. We just have work that needs doing. Sometimes the thread snaps and we have to stop everything to tie it back together, which is a pain, but that’s the nature of the business. We get our tea from a guy who comes by on a cycle every morning. We sit on the steps for ten minutes and then get back to it. It’s not the most glamorous job in the world, but it’s steady and it keeps the lights on. We take pride in just being reliable. If we say we will have it done, we usually do.
