We are down in the cellar of the supermarket building on Ashram Road. It’s a bit of an older spot, but it stays cooler than the street level during those hot Ahmedabad afternoons. Being near the Natraj Cinema means there is always some kind of noise or crowd nearby, which makes the area feel alive. Oxford Consultancy Service has been operating out of this space for quite a while now. The office is full of old wooden desks and stacks of papers that we try to keep organized, though it’s a constant battle. We start our day early before the traffic on Ashram Road gets too heavy, which is getting harder to do these days. Most people find us by looking for the supermarket first since our entrance is a little tucked away. Inside, it’s just a regular workplace. We have a few computers that have seen better days and a water cooler that makes a loud thud every time someone uses it. The walls are painted a plain off-white, and we have some old calendars hanging up. We deal with people coming in to ask about different services, and we just sit down and talk through what they need. It isn’t a high-tech environment with flashing lights or modern art. It is just a place where we do our work and try to help the folks who walk down those stairs to see us. Sometimes it gets a bit dusty being in the cellar, but we’re used to it.
