We have been set up here at Ambica House for quite a while now. If you know the area near C. U. Shah College, you probably know where we are. It’s right opposite the United Bank of India near Income Tax. The streets get pretty crowded around here during the day, especially with all the students and people going to the government offices. Inside our shop, it’s usually a mix of sounds. You’ve got the old offset machines thumping away in the back and the quiet hum of the digital printers up front. We spend a lot of time looking at ink levels and paper stacks. Sometimes the smell of the chemicals is pretty strong, but you get used to it after a few years. It’s not a fancy place with carpets or anything like that. We have some desks that have seen better days and shelves full of old jobs that people never picked up. Most of the people who work here live nearby in Ahmedabad, so we just walk or take a rickshaw in. It’s a simple routine. We start early, get the machines warmed up, and try to get through the pile of orders. Some days everything goes smooth, other days a machine jams and we’re stuck with grease on our hands for two hours trying to fix it. That’s just how it goes with printing. It’s a lot of physical work, lifting heavy boxes of paper and making sure the colors look right on the page.
