Our office is tucked away in Mandavi Ni Pole, right in the heart of old Ahmedabad. If you know Manek Chowk, you know how crowded and lively it gets. Finding 1205 Dev Ni Sheri can be a bit of a puzzle for someone who isn't from around here, but once you get inside, it’s a different world. We’ve been doing publishing work from this spot for quite some time. The building is old, like everything else in the Pole, which gives it a certain character you don't find in the new parts of the city. We spend most of our days surrounded by papers and proofs. It’s noisy outside with the scooters and people shouting, but we’ve learned to tune it out. Sometimes the monkeys on the rooftops make more noise than the traffic. We don't have a big corporate lobby or anything, just desks piled high with manuscripts and a couple of computers that have seen better days. Lunch usually involves something quick from the market nearby, maybe some dhokla or fafda. It’s a small team here, so we all end up doing a bit of everything, from checking the print quality to answering the door. The summers here are tough, the walls hold the heat, but we keep the windows open for whatever breeze comes through the narrow lanes. It is just a plain, hardworking publishing house in a very traditional part of town, keeping the presses moving.
