Akash Textile is located at Plot No. 704/b in Phase 4 of the GIDC. If you come by our place, you will hear the constant drone of the looms before you even see the sign. The noise is quite something, and we all have to speak a bit louder to be heard over it. Inside, the air is often filled with tiny bits of lint and thread, which is just part of working with fabric. We have rows of machines that turn out rolls of cloth all day long. My job involves keeping an eye on the threads to make sure nothing snaps or gets tangled up. We have stacks of finished rolls wrapped in plastic waiting in the corner of the warehouse. The floor is often covered in colorful scraps of fabric. It’s a busy environment, especially when we have several machines running at once. The lighting is bright so we can spot any defects in the weave as it comes off the machine. We have a small staff of operators who are very fast with their hands. Most of them have worked in textiles their whole lives. We take a break in the middle of the day to eat together and talk about things other than work for a bit. The building gets quite warm in the afternoon, but we have some large exhaust fans that help a little. It’s a lot of hours for all of us here in Phase 4, but we just keep at it.
