Working out of 187 in the GIDC Industrial Estate means you get used to the sound of metal and the smell of grease pretty quickly. Munjal Auto Industries Limited has been in this spot for a while now. The building is large and gray, like most of the others on this stretch of the estate. It gets really hot under the roof in the middle of summer, so we have big fans going all the time to keep the air moving for the guys on the floor. We make auto parts, mostly for the bigger companies, so there is always a truck being loaded or unloaded at the gate. The floor is covered in machines and there’s a lot of noise, so you have to shout a bit if you want to be heard over the presses. Lunchtime is when things finally go quiet for half an hour, and everyone sits out in the shade of the wall if there is any. It’s a hard-working atmosphere, and nobody really cares about fancy clothes or polished floors here. We just focus on the parts we’re making and making sure the machines don’t break down in the middle of a run. The road outside is full of potholes from the heavy trucks, and when it rains, the whole area gets pretty muddy. It’s just a standard factory life, nothing more and nothing less. We’ve got a small office for the admin stuff, but most of the action is out on the floor.
