Kanaiya Wire Industries

Down at Plot No. 42 in the GIDC, the machines at Kanaiya Wire Industries are always humming. It is a constant, low sound that you eventually stop noticing after being here for a few hours. We make wire, and that means we deal with big, heavy spools of metal all day long. The floor is hard concrete and usually has little bits of scrap metal scattered around. We have to be very careful where we walk so we don't trip. The air smells a bit like oil and hot metal most of the time. We start the day by checking the tension on the lines. If something is just a little bit off, the wire comes out wrong and we have to scrap it and start all over. It is a lot of watching the machines and waiting. We are not a huge operation, just a few of us making sure everything keeps running smooth. We take our tea breaks outside because it gets a bit stuffy inside the metal shed. There is a lot of heavy lifting when the finished coils are finally ready to be moved. We use a manual trolley, but it still takes a lot of muscle to get them onto the trucks. The GIDC estate is always busy, with vehicles constantly backing in and out of the narrow gates. We don't have a fancy office or anyone to answer the phones with a script. Usually, someone just wipes their hands on a rag and picks up the line.
