Gruhsobha Furniture

The shop is right there at 1 Saraswati Nagar, just across from the D Cabin railway crossing in Sabarmati. If you live around here, you know the crossing gate is down half the time. We sit and watch the trains go by while we’re working on the furniture. It gets pretty dusty with the wind blowing off the tracks, so there is a lot of cleaning to do every single morning. We’ve got all sorts of wooden things packed into the space. Moving a heavy wardrobe or a sofa set is a two-man job and usually ends with us being covered in sweat. It’s not a fancy showroom with big lights. It’s just a place where we keep the stock and try to stay out of the sun. The afternoon heat in this part of Ahmedabad is no joke. Sometimes we just sit on the stools near the entrance to catch a bit of a breeze. Most people stop by in the evening when the weather cools down a bit. We spend a lot of time just chatting with the neighbors or the people waiting for the train gate to open. It’s a simple way to spend the day. There is always something to fix or a shelf that needs moving. We don’t have any big speeches to give about what we do. It’s just furniture and wood and the sound of the trains. That’s basically our life at the shop.
