Kapasia Bazar in Ahmedabad is an old place with a lot of history behind it. Our address is at the Maskati Market, which is basically a crowded street full of people selling all kinds of cotton and cloth. We are at number 59 in Sakar Bazar. The buildings here are quite old, and the stairs are narrow and steep. It is a different world compared to the new shopping malls popping up elsewhere. We deal with cotton, so there is always a fine layer of white dust on everything, including our clothes, by the end of the shift. The phones ring quite a bit with people asking about the daily prices and what we have available. We spend a lot of time on the move, checking the bales and making sure the counts are exactly what they should be. Ahmedabad gets incredibly hot in the summer, and these old market buildings do not always have the best cooling systems. We just use the old ceiling fans and keep the doors open to catch a breeze. Lunch is usually brought from home in a tiffin and eaten at the small wooden desk in the back. We know all the other shop owners on the road, and we often talk about the market rates while having a quick tea. It is a simple way of working that has been this way for a long time. We just keep the routine going every single day.
