Irfhan Ahamad General Store

My shop, Irfhan Ahamad General Store, is located in the Idgah Katghar area of Agra. We are right in the Idgah Colony, and people around here usually just refer to the area as Ead Ga. It is a very lived-in neighborhood with lots of families who have been here for generations. My shop is on a corner, and I keep the doors wide open so the breeze can come in, though it mostly just brings in the heat during the summer months. I sell the basics—flour, rice, oil, and some snacks for the children. I have a few jars of colorful sweets right at the front because they catch the eye of the kids walking home from school. The walls are lined with wooden racks that I built myself a long time ago. They are a bit crooked now, but they hold the weight of the cans just fine. I don't use a computer for my work; I prefer using a pen and a ledger to keep track of what I buy and sell. The street outside can be quite dusty, so I am always dusting off the packets of biscuits. Most of my customers are my neighbors, and we often spend a few minutes chatting about the local news or the price of vegetables while I pack their groceries into brown paper bags. It is a quiet, honest way to make a living in Agra.
