Down at 116 Delhi Gate, the traffic is almost always moving. Our place sits right in the middle of that Agra energy. We open up early and the first thing we do is clean the glass surfaces. Since we deal with eyes, things have to be kept tidy, though the back office is usually a mess of folders and pens. We have these big machines for checking vision and they take up most of the space in the exam rooms. The staff sits behind a wooden counter near the entrance. We greet people as they come in, though sometimes we’re buried in a ledger or trying to figure out a glitch in the software. It’s not a quiet place because of the street noise, but we’ve gotten used to it over the years. We have a small water station for the patients because it gets quite hot in the afternoons. Sometimes we share a box of biscuits in the break area when things slow down for twenty minutes. Most of the people who come to see us are worried about their sight, so we try to keep a calm atmosphere even when it’s hectic. There is no polished marketing talk here, just us doing our work and making sure the appointments stay on time as much as possible. When the sun sets over Delhi Gate, we wrap things up, turn off the equipment, and make sure the door is locked tight for the night.
