Down here in Village Wajidpur Kattian Wali, things move at their own pace. We are based out of this post office area in Tehsil Abohar, mostly doing construction work with the JCBs. It’s a rural spot in Ferozepur district, so a lot of our work is out in the fields or on the local roads that need fixing. The yard where we keep the machines is usually full of red dust from the various projects. We don’t have a big fancy office with air conditioning or anything like that. It’s mostly just us sitting around a wooden table talking about which site needs the equipment next. Sometimes the weather in Punjab gets really dry, and that makes the digging harder, but the machines are tough. We’ve been part of this village for a long time. People know us by name, and they just walk into the yard if they need a trench dug or some land cleared. We do a lot of small jobs for the local farmers and some bigger ones when the roads are being built. It’s honest work, even if it leaves us covered in dirt by the end of the shift. We usually start early in the morning before the sun gets too hot. There’s always someone around to share a cup of tea while we wait for the diesel delivery or check the tires. The local kids sometimes stop by to watch the machines move, and the noise of the engines is just part of the village life now.
