Swapnatori Foundation

Our place is located in Ghosh Para, over in Krishnapur, Kolkata 700102. It’s a bit of a tight squeeze in this part of town, especially on the narrow roads where the bikes and people are always moving. The foundation operates out of a space that feels more like a home than a workplace sometimes. We have a small sign out front so people don't walk right past it. The floor is that old-fashioned stone that stays cool even when it’s boiling outside in May. We spend a lot of time sitting around the main wooden table talking through things or trying to get the internet to behave. Ghosh Para is a lively neighborhood, so there’s always the sound of someone selling vegetables or neighbors chatting right outside the window. It makes it hard to feel lonely when you’re working late. We don’t have a lot of fancy decorations on the walls, just some calendars and notes pinned up with tape. The roof leaks a tiny bit during the heavy monsoon rains, so we have to move the bags of documents away from that one corner. It’s just how things are here. Most of the people who come by are folks from around the area who know us by name. We don’t really have a formal way of doing things, we just do what needs doing when we show up in the morning and wait for the sun to go down.
