We are located at the NITCO Marble Land on Plot No 3, along Kanjur Village Road in Kanjurmarg East. This part of Mumbai is always moving, and our yard is no different. We have large slabs of marble and stone stacked everywhere, and the cranes are usually busy shifting them around for customers to see. It’s a dusty place, naturally, because cutting and moving stone creates a lot of fine grit that settles on everything. We wear sturdy boots and spend most of our time out in the open or under the big sheds. It’s a lot of heavy lifting and careful maneuvering so nothing gets cracked. People come by to look at the different patterns in the stone, and we walk them around the rows of slabs. The office is a bit of a refuge from the heat and the noise of the machinery outside. It’s not a quiet job; there’s always the sound of a saw or a truck engine in the background. We’ve been at this Kanjurmarg location for quite a while, and the routine is pretty much set. We start early when it’s still a bit cool and keep going until the sun starts to drop behind the buildings. It’s just us, the stone, and the daily work of getting these heavy pieces ready to be sent out to sites across the city.
