Our office is located in the Embassy Centre at Nariman Point, which is one of those busy parts of Mumbai where everyone is always in a hurry. We are up on the seventh floor, in unit 712. It sounds very high up, but it is just another office floor once you get inside. We deal with technical fabrics and materials used in big construction and earthworks. It is a bit different from the usual clothing fabric most people think of. We have samples of thick, heavy-duty materials sitting on the shelves. Most of our day is spent on the phone or working on computers, talking to engineers and site managers who are out in the field. Even though we are in a fancy-sounding area like Nariman Point, our office feels pretty ordinary. We have the usual desks, some old filing cabinets, and a coffee machine that gets a lot of use. The view outside is of other big buildings, and you can see the sea if you lean the right way at the window. We try to keep things simple here. There is no corporate dress code; we just dress for the weather and the work. It is a lot of technical talk and numbers, but we enjoy the challenge of figuring out how these fabrics can help build better roads or walls. It is a steady job in a fast-paced part of the city. People here are friendly and we mostly just get on with our tasks.
